Housing benefit in Limoges

Renting a flat in Limoges? Several schemes can reduce your real rent. This guide explains which benefits exist, who is eligible and how to apply — whether you're a student, an employee, a family or in a difficult situation.

All the benefits available in Limoges

Each benefit has its own conditions. The key point: apply as soon as you sign the lease, since entitlements aren't backdated.

ALS
Allocation de Logement Sociale

ALS is the most common benefit for private-market tenants in Limoges. It's paid by the Haute-Vienne CAF directly into your bank account (or to your landlord under a direct-payment arrangement).

The amount depends on your rent, your income (from two years ago) and your household. For a T2 or T3 in Begip's portfolio in Limoges, ALS can be worth between €50 and €200/month depending on your situation.

  • Private-market tenant (not social housing)
  • Subject to income limits (CAF scale)
  • Apply at caf.fr as soon as you sign the lease
  • Paid monthly, backdated to the month of application

APL
Aide Personnalisée au Logement

APL applies mainly to approved (conventionné) social housing and to home-buyers. In the non-approved private market managed by Begip, it's usually ALS (or ALF for families) that applies rather than APL.

If you're already a tenant in an APL-approved home, you keep your entitlements when your situation changes. If in doubt, the Limoges CAF tells you which benefit applies to your lease.

  • Mainly APL-approved homes
  • Subject to income limits
  • Apply at caf.fr
  • Cannot be combined with ALS

FSL
Fonds de Solidarité Logement

The FSL is run by the Haute-Vienne department. It can fund the security deposit, the first month's rent, or help in the event of arrears. It's a safety net for households in financial difficulty when moving in.

FSL applications are made through a social worker (Limoges CCAS, a social worker, the CAF). Processing takes several weeks — plan ahead before moving in if you can.

  • Very low-income households
  • Can fund the security deposit
  • Apply via a social worker or the Limoges CCAS
  • Allow for processing time

Visale
Visale guarantee — Action Logement

Visale is a free rent guarantee provided by Action Logement. It replaces a personal guarantor (parent, relative) in your rental application. Begip accepts Visale as a guarantee for its properties in Limoges.

It covers up to 36 months of unpaid rent and charges. Especially useful if you don't have a guarantor in France (a foreign national, self-employed, on a fixed-term contract).

  • Under 30 (no contract condition)
  • Private-sector employee relocating (permanent, fixed-term, work-study)
  • Apply at visale.fr before signing the lease
  • Free for tenant and landlord

Mobili-Jeune
Action Logement support for work-study students

Mobili-Jeune is support of €10 to €100/month for young people under 30 on work-study contracts (apprenticeship or professional-training contract). It tops up ALS or APL and isn't subject to the same income conditions.

To qualify, your employer must contribute to Action Logement (private-sector companies with over 10 employees, excluding agriculture). Apply online at actionlogement.fr.

  • Work-study students under 30
  • Employer contributing to Action Logement
  • Rent between €100 and €600 (excluding charges)

ALF
Allocation de Logement Familiale

ALF is for households with dependent children, recently married couples or those with dependants (elderly or disabled people). It's managed by the CAF and cannot be combined with ALS or APL.

For a family renting a T3 or T4 in Limoges with Begip, ALF can be significant depending on the family quotient. The CAF automatically works out which benefit (ALS, APL or ALF) is the most favourable.

  • Families with dependent children (CAF claimants)
  • Couples married for less than 5 years
  • Dependent relatives (older or younger)
  • Apply at caf.fr — automatic assessment

Go to caf.fr and create your personal account (or log in if you're already a claimant). The relevant CAF for Limoges is the Haute-Vienne one.

Housing benefit in Limoges — your questions

The most common questions about housing benefit in Limoges.

What benefit for a T2 rented in the private market in Limoges?

For a T2 flat in the private market managed by Begip in Limoges, it's usually the ALS (social housing allowance) that applies. The amount depends on your income (from two years ago), your household and the rent. Estimate your benefit at caf.fr before signing to get an idea of the amount.

What is the FSL and how do you access it in the Haute-Vienne?

The FSL (Housing Solidarity Fund) is run by the Haute-Vienne department. It can fund the security deposit or the first month's rent for households in difficulty. Applications are made through a social worker (Limoges CCAS, a social worker) or directly via the CAF depending on the case.

Can you combine ALS and Visale?

Yes. ALS (rent support paid by the CAF) and Visale (a rent guarantee from Action Logement) are two different schemes that combine perfectly. ALS reduces your effective rent, and Visale replaces the guarantor in your application. Begip accepts Visale for its properties in Limoges.

When should you apply for ALS to the Limoges CAF?

Ideally on the day you sign the lease, or within the following few days at the latest. ALS entitlement runs from the month of the application — it isn't backdated. Waiting two months means losing two months of benefit. Begip reminds you at the handover of keys.
